    01. Dixie Pig BBQDixie bills itself as Back Yard

Barbecuing at its Best!! and its pretty close to the truth. Theplace feels like someones backyard, with makeshift gazebos forseating outside and nothing more than a tiled porch for insideeating, lit by yellow uorescentsway Redneck. But their ribs areunbeatable, crisp on the outside and soft, fall-off-the-boneinside. The sauce is North Carolina-style vinegar-base, and theybottle their own, with Gold (honey mustard), Hot, Sweet (nice andthick) and Vinegar variations. in one location unless you are doing something right. Startingout as a Cajun-style ribs & wings place, with some nice seafoodgumbo and Louisiana shrimp dishes, they have expanded the menu toinclude

nouveau American tastessuch as really original hot raspberrychicken wings that are a knockout. They also have the hands-downbest BBQ chickenmeaty, moist, tastyand baby-back ribs that reallydo fall off the bones. Lots of pig paraphernalia and Mardi Grasbric-a-brac dress up the place, and their BBQ avor has an Asian inuence that makes it more interesting than your average sauce.105 SW6th St., Pompano

    03. Rock n Roll Ribs

Owned by the drummer from Iron Maiden, there is heavy metalmusic on the big screen and enough platinum records and guitars fora rock museum. What really rocks here is the pulled pork, whichmelts in your mouth, and the ribs arent bad either. The sauces aresweet; the hot sauce has a nice tang and the mustard sauce is verytasty. Overall its the most upscale BBQ environment out there, withdrop lighting, dark wood and window booths. The sauce for the friedonion rings is take-home good. Great coleslaw, too.4651 State Rd.7, Coral Springs

    04. Voodoo BBQ Okay, so its a chain, and it feels like

a chainbright, noisy, with a fast-food approach. Having saidthat, they do a few things really well, which is why they havelines out the door. One of their standouts, and not common for BBQplaces, is a slow-smoked brisket that is moist and delicious. Also, their pulled pork has just the right burned bits to give it alittle chew. They serve a lot of New Orleans style food, too, suchas Gumbo and Jambalaya; the Mojo Crystal, their hot sauce, is ahallmark of their regional taste.151 N. Hiatus Road, PembrokePines

Bigger, Faster, BetterTHE NEW RICK CASE VW DEALERSHIP IS THELARGEST IN THE WORLD. BUT ITS NOT JUST FOR SHOW.

    By J.P Faber

On a hot day in August, construction magnate Terry Stiles tookthe podium at a topping off ceremony for a new building his crewwas racing to complete: A Volkswagen dealership in a strip of Daviealong I-75 that borders

Weston. Behind him a massive slab of pre-cast concrete, decorated with U.S., Florida and Styles Corp. ags, was readied forits nal hoist to the top.

I just wanted to thank my guys for all their hard work, he said, noting that two crews had worked 12 hours a day, six days a week toerect the structure in record time. Of course its still not fastenough for Rick Case, he said, with a deliberate wink.

The structure that Styles workers were laboring to wrap up ispurportedly the largest VW dealership in the world, both in termsof height and square footage. Its job: To house so many new VWsthat any combination

of color, style, interior and option package would be availableto a would-be customer. Like some scene out of the Matrix, whererows and rows of armaments pop up to offer a seemingly in nitechoice, the idea is that you can dial up your dream auto and haveit available immediately. Its also the latest jewel in the crownfor Case, one of South Floridas auto dealership kingpins, with areputation for being driven and getting things done.

Were just trying to make it easy for the customer, says Case, whose auto dealership empire includes Nissan, Volvo, Toyota, VW,Fiat and Honda outlets. To make it fast and easy to buy a car.

That may seem like an obvious tactic in a world of incrediblechoice options, but its really a new wrinkle in an old businessandjust the latest in Cases arsenal of tools to attract new customersand retain existing ones.

Among his earlier innovations: Doubling the factory warrantiesof his cars. Which means that if a carmaker guarantees its vehiclesfor ve years and/or 10,000 miles, Case doubles that to 10 yearsand/or 20,000 miles. Which is one reason that he stopped carryinglines of American cars 20 years ago (Theyre better now, but backthen I was constantly doing warranty work, he says.)

    retail

Rick Case and his wife Rita break ground on the new VWdealership.

    Were just trying to

    make it easy for the

    customer. To make it

    fast and easy to buy

    a car, says Rick Case.

  • LMGFL.COM | DECEMBER 2013 33

Another perk for customers: A discount gasoline center, whereCase sells fuel to his customers at cut-rate prices. We buy tankersand sell the gas at wholesale prices, he says. But better still arethe car washes. All you have to do is pull up and get a car wash.He also lures customers back with a rewards card program, so thatevery time they buy a car from a Rick Case dealership they earnpoints toward future discounts. The Rick Case rewards save youhundreds, even thousand of dollarsand the car washes are free!

As for the new VW dealership, Cases superlatives are matched bysome record-breaking gures. At 95 feet high, it actually is thetallest, and

at 328,000 square feet, it actually is the largest VW dealershipin the world. Case would have made it larger, but it was thebiggest he could get the city of Davie to approve. When it comes online this month (December) it will house 800 cars and 200employees, most of them armed with iPads so they can instantlysupply information to customers who will travel with them byelevator to one of eight oors, all stocked with different models, all basking in the glow of LED lighting.

Its all part of the Case here-and-now approach to sales, including keeping models of the competition in house. If they sayIm going to look at [another make] well let them try it

right then, he says.Case, meanwhile, continues to

push the envelope of both the art and science of selling cars.Last year he celebrated his 50th year in the business, and thisyear hes announced a three-year sponsorship agreement with theBroward Center for the Performing Arts. In exchange, Rick Caseautomobiles will be on display at BCPAalong with signage, playbillads and a lobby kiosk.

I just love the business, says Case. I love dealing with people. That is fortunate, since 600,000 BCPA patrons will be ling past hisnew car displays each year. And if they want a particular VW,theres certain to be one in stock. Q

The largest VW dealership in the world is the latest jewel inthe crown for Rick Case.

The rst time colleges called Roger Harriott and asked himpolitely to leave his job and join their teams he wasnt even astate champion. Not anymore.

Harriott, who took over the high school football program at NSUsUniversity School in 2007, hasnt had a losing season sinceincludingthe 2010-2012 years of 12-1,12-1, and 14-1. But the best was lastyear, when Harriott steered his squad to a 13-0 record and a 24-17win in the Class 3A state championship game against a team fromMadison, FL. Every team has a different personality and last yearsteam just was determined to win, Harriott says.

Funny thing is, most people didnt think Harriott would still bethe coach last year. He had earlier accepted a job offer to becomethe running-backs coach at Syracuse University before having achange of heart.

It was the most agonizing decision my wife Merisa and I had tomake, he says. It was a very attering opportunity. After thinkingthings through, however, Harriott decided to stay. We felt likethat opportunity might disrupt our family dynamic. So we decided toturn it back around and come back to University School. Its beennothing but a blessing.

That hasnt stopped college football coaches from ringingHarriotts phone, however. Its only gotten worse since he won theClass 3A state title last year, including the Sun Sentinel naminghim one of the top candidates for the vacant FAU head coachgig.

It has been a dif cult process because thereve been severalintercollegiate programs that have offered me various positions, just recently, says Harriott. Its just humbling, to be honest withyou.

What keeps Harriott at University School, the high school on theDavie campus of Nova Southeastern University, is what he calls theschools therapeutic environment, which gives students a safe placeto grow. Its just a very heartwarming and welcoming place.

Harriott, a former running back for St. Thomas Aquinas HighSchool and Villanova University, also thrives on the opportunitiesthat football presents for teaching life lessons to high schoolstudents. Just recently, Miami Dolphins offensive lineman JonathanMartin made the news because he left the team amid reports that hewas bullied. Harriott didnt shy away from talking about it with histeam.

From a leadership standpoint you always want to take currentevents and help kids realize why its so important to balance theiremotions and make appropriate decisions, Harriott says. Those arelearning lessonsand a great teaching tool.

The hope for fans and supporters of the University Schoolfootball team is that Harriott cares so much about shaping youngpeople that hell pass on bigger money for college football. Thatand his love of South Florida, of course.

What I love the most about Fort Lauderdale is the diversity ofour culture here, he says. Were extremely accepting in regards toappreciating each other for our differences. Not to mention theweather. Q

Sometimes, extraordinary things can come from humble beginnings. As head custodian at Westchester Elementary in Coral Springs, youwould never assume that Joseph Gormley would

come to stand next to celebrities like LeBron James and MarioChalmers, raising thousands of dollars for charity.

Josephs story can be traced back to James Truslow Adams idealsfor the American Dreama dream that has carried Joseph through hisjourney of self-discovery. Born and raised in Glasgow, Scottland,Joseph moved to Florida 10 years ago when he met and fell and lovewith his American wife, Erin Ruth.

He was always the artistic type, having attended college inScotland to be a graphic designer, but it wasnt until his wifebought him a set of watercolor paints for Christmas in 2006, thathe truly began to realize his own slice of the American Dream.

My wife saw my artistic talents and thought that painting wouldbe a great hobby for me to do in my free time. To my surprise, Icame to truly enjoy it. I tried all types of styles and mediumsmyfavorite being acrylic pop art, says Joseph. It has taken me sixyears to nd my true style for the brand Joseph Gormley Art and I amstill learning.

In April of 2012, Josephs wee hobby evolved into somewhat of ahometown phenomenon. I painted a portrait of Neil Lennon, the HeadCoach of my favorite Scottish Soccer team, Celtic FC. My artworkwas given to a website called CQN (Celtic Quick News) and was puton eBay to raise money for an 11-year-old girl in Scotland whoneeded help for an overseas cancer treatment, recalls Joseph.Within days, his painting raised $8,000 for her treatment.

It was such an awesome feeling, knowing that I had donesomething to make a difference in someone elses life.

After that moment I knew I wanted to help others and that Icould use my gift of painting to do it, he says.

Since then, Josephs artwork has graced the walls of the Sun LifeStadium, the BB&T Center, and the homes of dozens ofcelebrities. His paintings have been seen and signed by celebritieslike Rod Stewart, David Beckham, Steven Tyler, Wimbledon winnerAndy Murray, ex-Miami Hurricane Bennie Blades, Seattle Seahawksplayers Marshawn Lynch and quarterback Russell Wilson. And he hasraised money for several charitable organizations, including TheOsacar Knox Appeal, The Yorkhill Childrens Foundation, The EilidhBrown Memorial Fund, The Prestige Club, and The Boys and GirlsClub.

This is just the beginning of my American Dream, says Joseph. One day I hope to reach my goal of raising $1 million for charity.Coming to America and making a million for myself, thats boringitsbeen done. But, coming to America and raising a million for otherpeoplethat will tell people, long after Im gone, about what kind ofman I wanted to be. My artwork is a legacy I will be proud to leavebehind. Q

Business Report CardA Good Year For Broward EconomicDevelopment

Each fall the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance announces itsachievements in economic development at an annual mega meeting. This years presentation at the Signature Grand in

Davie marked the Alliances 50th birthdayit was rst founded asthe Broward Industrial Board in 1963and drew a record audience of650.

One big focus was on new transportation initiatives underway orplanned for Broward County, one reason why Dave Barger, presidentand CEO of JetBlue Airways, was the keynote speaker. He used theoccasion to reveal expansion plans for the airline at FortLauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Bargers report was just one of a bevy of announcements about newcompanies, new jobs and, equally important, retained jobsthose thatmight have gone elsewhere without incentives to stay. Altogetherthe alliance, Broward Countys of cial public/private partnershipfor economic development, reported that it helped attract 22 newcompany relocations and expansions during its 2012-13 scal yearending Sept. The result: more than 1,700 new value-added jobs, nearly 1,500 retained jobs and more than $180 million in newcapital investment.

Some of the companies that relocated or expanded in BrowardCounty were:

Actavis, a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in Davie, isadding 220 new jobs and retaining 509 jobs, and will make a $40.5million capital investment.

Anthem Education, a Fort Lauderdale headquarterd company forpost-secondary educational institutions, is adding 70 new jobs andretaining 85.

Citrix, the leading software developer with headquarters in FortLauderdale, is adding 200 new jobs and making a $7.5 millioncapital investment.

Great Healthworks, a Hollywood company that develops andmanufactures nutraceuticals, will add 401 jobs and retain 320.

Parallon, a healthcare company/workforce solutions companyheadquartered in Sunrise, will add 125 new jobs and retain 164, andplans to invest $3.9 million.

The alliance also announced two new company expansions, startingwith Peoples Trust Insurance Co., a Florida-based company thatprovides affordable homeowners insurance. New to Broward, it willprovide 500 jobs300 immediately and 200 more in the next 24monthsas it moves into the Research Park at Florida AtlanticUniversitys Deer eld Beach campus.

The second was Nyrstar, a global mining and metals business, which will establish its new corporate headquarters for theAmericas in downtown Fort Lauderdale, adding 25 new jobs at anaverage salary of $143,000.

This past year was a banner year for the alliance, said BobSwindell, president and CEO of the Greater Fort LauderdaleAlliance. Our work to diversify Browards economy, with ourpartners, is paying off in many waysincluding the fact that BrowardCounty had the lowest unemployment rate of any urban area inFlorida for all of 2013.

At its annual fete, the alliance also installed FP&Lexecutive Ben Wesley as the new chairman of the board, and awardedMike Jackson, Chairman and CEO of AutoNation, with its 2013 RayFerrero Jr. Economic Development Leadership Award. Q
