Why was the Manhattan show cancelled? ›

The series premiered on WGN America on July 27, 2014. The series earned critical acclaim throughout its run, but failed to secure adequate ratings. As a result, it was canceled on February 2, 2016, after its second season, becoming the first WGN America original series to be canceled.

Set during WWII in Los Alamos, New Mexico, secrets dominate every facet of family and professional life as scientists Frank Winter and Charlie Isaacs compete to create the world's first atomic bomb.

Though slow to start, Manhattan is a top-notch drama thanks to a talented cast, beautiful cinematography, and a keen eye for period detail.

Charlie Isaacs seems to be a little bit Richard Feynman and a little bit James Franck, but married to the wife of Louis Hempelmann (the project's medical director, who was married to Elinor Pulitzer, heir of the famous newspaper fortune).

Manhattan is a (very) fictionalised telling of the drama, secrecy and breakthroughs of the Los Alamos nuclear bomb project. Most of the characters are not real but loosely drawn from real-world counterparts; the only two actual scientists to pop up in the show are J Robert Oppenheimer and Niels Bohr.

The show portrayed a fictionalized version of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. The second season focused on the challenges of designing and assembling the “Gadget” for the Trinity test, the security situation and espionage, and personal relationships. “Manhattan” was sadly not renewed for a third season.

Finally, Christopher Denham, who who played the duplicitous fictional spy Jim Meeks in Manhattan now appears in Nolan's Oppenheimer—as real-life spy Klaus Fuchs. Olivia Williams, John Benjamin Hickey, Daniel Stern, Ashley Zukerman and Rachel Brosnahan in Manhattan.

Sources differ regarding the end of the Manhattan Project. Some claim it ended with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki, while other sources state the end of World War II.
