ABSTRACT Travel support will make possible the participation of students who would otherwise be unable to attend. ICCD conference will expose students to the discipline and encourage them to pursue careers in emerging issues in computer system design. Particular attention is paid to directing support towards under-represented groups, e.g., gender or ethnic minorities and students from smaller or less well-known institutions. A small number of undergraduate applicants will also be considered to better reach out to potential researchers in this field. The support will provide students who attend with the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of mentors and peers, furthering their education and research experiences. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
The 2018 IEEE International Conference on Computer Design (ICCD) will be held in Orlando, Florida on October 7-10, 2018. The ICCD for the past 35 years has been the premier academic forum where emerging trends and novel concepts in computer systems and design are explored. The conference brings together professionals from academic and industrial background to address the challenges, and discuss practical and theoretical work covering systems and applications, workload characterization, computer architecture, security, verification and test, design tools and automation methodologies, and nanoscale design technologies. Highly original ideas, new approaches, and groundbreaking results are expected.

This student travel grant was distributed among 21 selected students who attended the 2018 IEEE International Conference on Computer Design from October 7-10, 2018 in Orlando, Florida. The selection process included both technical and broader impacts. On the technical front students that had accepted papers at the conference were given preference. This encouraged the students to attend the conference and present their research outcomes to industry and academic leaders in the field of computer design. Moreover, the selected students were required to write a one page summary of the conference experience. This encouraged them to attend technical and social event sessions, and interact with other conference participants. The broader impacts of the selection process was focused on attracting students from underrepresented groups. In this regard 33.3% of the awards were made to students from underrepresented minority groups. 100% of the awards were made to students who presented their research outcomes at the conference.
The travel grant was advertised on the conference webpage, and efforts were made to reach out to minority serving student organizations, such as CRA-W, NSBE, CAHSI, and IAAMCS. The travel grant was managed by an administrative assistant in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Connecticut. The university uses PaymentWorks to manage distribution of funds by completing vendor application for each awarded student. This information is used to verify each student's eligibility to receive funds, and also distribute funds to each awarded student in a timely manner.
