Imagine having X-rays so precise that they could detect a single atom of impurity inside a solid crystal. That day is coming soon – thanks to an experiment Surrey scientists have described as combining the powers of Superman and Antman. Researchers are celebrating a breakthrough in atomic-scale X-ray imaging, detecting the presence of just a few hundred gallium atoms inside an otherwise pure silicon crystal. At Surrey’s Ion Beam Centre, they implanted just 350 zeptogrammes of gallium atoms in an otherwise pure silicon crystal. That’s about a million billion times less than the mass of an ant or about a billion times less than that of a single cell. Remarkably, the X-ray facilities at the National Synchrotron Light Source II at Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA) were able to find the gallium. Being able to spot such tiny impurities could help build more efficient and powerful quantum computers. https://ow.ly/BBZh50Ryblx

In April, we had the delight of celebrating our postgraduate students with their graduation. It was a joy having our Chancellor, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in attendance. The events team did the most fantastic job of transforming the marquee into a gorgeous garden party-themed reception. Doesn't it look fabulous?

We are delighted to announce that we are building a new first-of-its-kind imaging system, thanks to a £3m grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. We believe that our new facility will help the UK gain the edge in materials science, helping researchers better understand and transform areas such as drug development, renewable energy and climate change.
