But Congress party members polled informally appeared to be split between the leading contenders, Lal Bahadur two, Shastri Morarji Desal, with Shastri, whom Nehru made his unofficial deputy last January, the favorite.

Nehru's remains were taken from funeral pyre Saturday in Hindu ceremonies and will be kept at the prime minister's official residence until their removal next month to his home town of Allehabad. Nehru died Wednesday of 8 stroke at the age of 74. He was cremated Thursday. Satya Narain Sinha, chief whip of the Congress party, announced after a meeting of the executive committee Saturday that every effort "will be made to avoid a contest." But it was not certain unanimity could be reached by the party's 500- member parliamentary group, which will select the new minister. Sinha made it clear the present provisional government of Guhzarilal Nanda cannot continue for long.

Nanada was chosen acting premier on the day of Nehru's death because he was the senior man in the cabinet. Roosevelt Baccalaureate Service To Be Held Today Rev. Marion C. Cyprus Water Station Bombed NICOSIA, Cyprus (P)- Saboteurs bombed a pumping station near a British military base Saturday, severely restricting the main water supply for 5,000 British servicemen and their families. A British spokesman said homemade gasoline bombs were used to set fire to the pumping station near the Greek Cypriot village of Ahna in south Cyprus.

No arrests had been made in the predawn attack. Until the station can be repaired in a day or two, the spokesman said, British personnel have been instructed to exercise strict economy with water. The base water supply has been sabotaged several times in recent years. Greek Cypriot farmers living nearby complain that the deep British wells drain their own shallow holes. Anti-British feeling has been running high in the Greek Cypriot community since a Royal Air Force airman and his wife were arrested last week on charges of smuggling arms to Turkish Cypriots.

Whether this figured in the bombing could not be determined. CURRENT RATE INSURED SAVINGS ASSOCIATIONS 395-1705 EACH ACCOUNT INSURED TO $10,000 BY A U.S. GOV'T AGENCY NEVER A CHARGE FOR OUR SERVICES! THE B. C. MORTON ORGANIZATION, INC.
