Residency & Age Requirements
In Utah, residents over the age of 21 who have at least one qualifying medical condition may apply for a medical marijuana card. Qualifying patients under the age of 21 can obtain a registry identification card, but they must have a parent or legal guardian who is eligible for a medical cannabis guardian card.

I have a qualifying condition.
Does it make me automatically qualified for Utah’s Medical Cannabis Program?
No, just because you have a qualifying condition does not entitle you to use medical marijuana in the state. You will still need the approval of a Utah medical marijuana physician to use medicinal cannabis.

No. Only licensed cannabis cultivation facilities can grow marijuana in Utah.

No. Medical cannabis is not eligible for reimbursem*nt through insurance.

How to Obtain A Medical
Marijuana Card in Utah?
To receive your medical marijuana card in Utah the requirements are:
- You must be a Utah resident.
- You must have at least one qualifying condition.
- You need to submit an application online.
- You need to meet in person with a medical provider registered with the Utah Department of Health to recommend medical marijuana.
- Get certified by the doctor.
- Pay a $15 application fee online.
Make an appointment with a licensed medical professional to be evaluated for a medical marijuana card. Please bring any appropriate medical records to the appointment. One of our cannabis doctors will determine whether or not you have a qualifying condition during the evaluation.
What is the card´s validity period?
The patient’s first medical cannabis card is valid for 6 months from the date of issuance.
Is it optional to have
a cannabis ID card?
No. Only patients that have been certified by a qualified practitioner will be allowed to possess and use medical cannabis in the state of Utah.

Is it okay to use medical
cannabis while waiting for

No. Only being qualified by a physician and getting a medical marijuana card allows you to possess and use medical cannabis in Utah.

Your participation in a medical marijuana program is confidential and is protected under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Can a minor apply for the Utah
Medical Marijuana Card Program?
A minor cannot obtain a medical cannabis card unless their parent or legal guardian meets the requirements for a medical cannabis guardian card.
How would I know that my application has been approved?
If your application is approved you will receive an email from UDOH with a copy of your Utah medical cannabis card.
How long will the
application process take?
The application review process for adult patients 21 and older with a qualifying condition will be completed in 15 days or less.
For patients under the age of 21 and adult patients without a qualifying condition, the process can take longer because these applications must be reviewed by the Compassionate Use Board. It will be completed in 90 days or less.

What types of medical cannabis
products are approved for use in Utah?
According to Utah Medical Cannabis Act, only the forms below will be available:
- Aerosol
- Tablet
- Capsule
- Concentrated Oil
- Liquid Suspension
- Transdermal preparation
- Gelatinous cube
- Unprocessed cannabis flower in a tamper-evident and resistant container that is opaque that contains a quantity that varies no more than 10% from the stated weight at the time of packaging
- Wax or resin
- Medical cannabis devices such as a vaping pen that warms cannabis material into a vapor without the use of a flame and that delivers cannabis to an individual’s respiratory system
Is medical cannabis program participation publicly known?
No. Your participation in Utah’s Medical Cannabis Program will be kept private. DHHS has the authority to release information about whether an individual has a medical cannabis card without first obtaining written consent from the medical cannabis cardholder only in very rare cases (i.e. if law enforcement requires it).
What is the Compassionate Use Board?
The Compassionate Use Board is in charge of reviewing all card applications from patients under the age of 21 and those with conditions that are not listed in the statute. The Board is comprised of seven providers who meet on a case-by-case basis to review applications for medical cannabis cards.
Caregivers
Does the Utah Medical Cannabis
Program allow caregivers?
Yes. Adults 21 and older can provide care for patients that cannot obtain or consume medical cannabis on their own. Caregivers must be designated by the patient cardholders for whom they will be assisting. Utah issues Caregiver Cards for these cases that will authorize them to purchase marijuana products on behalf of their patients. The caregiver card is valid for 6 months. The fees for a caregiver card are $68.25 for the initial application and $14 for renewal.
What’s the difference between a caregiver and a guardian?
Caregivers are authorized to take care of adult patients that cannot purchase medical cannabis on their own.
Guardians are the parents/legal guardians of minor patients that have qualifying conditions.
There are different types of cannabis cards issued for guardians that are issued in conjunction:

- Provisional Patient Cards
The Compassionate Use Board must approve all provisional patient cards.

Where do I purchase medical
marijuana once I have my MMJ card?
You can only purchase cannabis products from a licensed Utah Utah marijuana dispensary.
Can anyone use
medical cannabis in the state?
No. Only Utah residents with valid state-issued medical marijuana cards are allowed to buy and possess medical cannabis. However, anyone can buy and possess hemp extract or CBD oil if it contains less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
How much medical marijuana
can I purchase at once?
Qualifying patients may not buy or possess more than what is necessary to provide 30 days of treatment based on the dosing guidelines recommended by their medical provider. This amount cannot be
- More than 113 grams of raw cannabis (flower)
- More than 20 grams of total composite THC in all other medicinal dosage forms
Reciprocity
Can I use my Utah medical
marijuana card in another state?
Each state has its own cannabis patient reciprocity policy. Some states allow non-residents to buy medical marijuana from dispensaries, while others have functional recreational marijuana laws that allow you to buy cannabis from non-medical shops regardless of residency status.
Out-of-state patients that have a Utah qualifying condition can register for a Non-Utah Resident card through the Electronic Verification System (EVS) with the Utah Department of Health and Human Services. Non-Utah residents can apply for a Utah medical cannabis card for up to two 21-day periods per calendar year.
